A Guide to Stonemasonry

In stonemasonry, the mason shapes an irregular piece of rock into an accurate structure. When stonemasons work on structure, they usually use levels, gauge lines, and a plumb bob in order to set its vertical and horizontal alignments. They also layout foundations and wall patterns with the use of rules, staked lines, and a straight edge. With the use of a chisel, hammers, and power grinder, a stonemason is able to smoothen out rough or defective spots and in order to repair cracked or chipped stone, they use a blowtorch.

If a stonemason will work on a monument, then they have to remove parts of the monument from the truck bed that carries them and using hoists, cranes or even skids, they guide it to the foundation. Then, the stonemason will make parts of the structure with a mixture composed of stone.

Stonemasons can be classified into many types.

The stonemason that works in a quarry splitting rock sheets down their vein so that chunks of stone can be extracted in a quarryman.

A sawyer mason makes these rough chunks of stone and using diamond-tipped saws, shapes them to the required size and shape.

A banker mason further shapes the rock into the required size and shape of the building design. Banker masons ensure that the orientation of the shaped stone in the building is the same as it was oriented in the ground.

The artistic ability of the carver mason is used to create designs and patterns in or from the stone-like figures, animals, or different designs.

Permanently fixing stones onto building structures using cement and epoxy resin is the specialization of a fixer mason. In a fixer mason’s job, you are required to work at high altitudes and it requires precise tolerances and so it is highly dangerous and you should be highly skilled as well. A fixer mason will use a tackle lift system in order to manipulate stone pieces that are very heavy.

Gravestones, statues, and memorials are carved by a memorial mason.

The workplace of a stonemason is generally outdoors. In this type of work, you will need to exercise great caution and wear hard hats because it is relatively hazardous. There is great physical demand for this work and during bad weather, there are fewer contracts because of the outside work they do. Because of the advancement in masonry technology, stonemasons can already work outdoors no matter what the weather condition is.

Working as a stonemason is doing hard labor since you are required to climb scaffolding, use hammers and chisels, and spend the whole day kneeling, bending, and lifting heavy material through rough terrain. Often, stonemasons are contracted privately and are given a time schedule to follow. Overtime and weekend work are sometimes necessary to be able to meet deadlines.
