When to Visit an Allergist
If possible, you should avoid allergies as much as you can. An allergist can teach you ways to avoid environments and things that could trigger an allergic reaction. It is the best ways to avoid medication and the misery that accompanies allergies.
There are many ways an allergist can help you. They know how to uncover hidden and misunderstood sensitivities, identifying natural remedies that work, and how best to remain comfortable. You need to make an appointment to see one, for various other reasons.
If you have a cold that simply will not go away, you need to make that appointment. A cough normally takes a couple of weeks at most to disappear. But if it persists or keeps resurging in a pattern, such as each night or just before spring, you are most likely dealing with an allergy. It is the same scenario with a headache you cannot explain.
You will also need to see the specialist if your usual meals or favorite meal gives you diarrhea. They will test you for food allergies, to help you identify which foods give you an allergic reaction, and which ones were simply responsible for an intolerance. A food allergy is characterized by an immune response to that particular food. That response is normally immediate, or not more than two hours later. You will notice swelling, hives, a rash, trouble breathing, and such. An intolerance, on the other hand, is trickier to identify. The symptoms show later, about three hours later, and manifest as mild nausea, bloating, or diarrhea. Once you identify the foods you are allergic to, you can avoid them and thus avoid those unpleasant reactions.
You need their advice when aspirin is no longer effective. Apart from using aspirin, most of us have no idea how to address an allergic reaction. It is, therefore, better to ask the specialist for their advice. They will identify your specific needs, and tell you which medications to buy. They will also teach you what to do in case you ever have such a reaction in the future.
Pregnant women are also advised to visit this specialist. When you are pregnant and suffer an allergic reaction, not any medication can be used. You need their specialized attention, to relieve you of that suffering, and to make sure your health and that of the child are not compromised.
If you wake up with itchy eyes, you need to make that appointment. You also need to do so if you frequently cough at night, apart from the itchy eyes. Most likely, you have been attacked by dust mites in your bed, and so need the specialist’s intervention.
If antibiotics cause you more problems than solutions, you should get checked out. There are cases of drug allergies, which explained why taking antibiotics to help you feel better only makes you feel worse. It is hard to know you are allergic to a medication. Most people explain it as being sick, but if you are not getting better, chances are your medications is responsible.
If you ever suspect you could be having an allergic reaction, no matter the cause, you need to talk to these specialists. It is better to be wrong than to keep on guessing. An allergic reaction can prove fatal in the end.
